There
are many types of problems that are addressed by Orthodontic therapy.
These can range from the movement of a single tooth to the movement
of all teeth with surgical repositioning of the bones that hold the teeth.
Below you will find examples of some of the most commonly treated
problems.
- One of
the most often encountered problems is crowding of the teeth with a
normal bite. This problem
is usually genetically predetermined and results from teeth that are
too large for the size of the bone that supports them.

- Protrusion
of the Upper teeth resulting in what is sometimes called buckteeth is
another common problem. Typically
this is caused by a disproportionate growth between the upper and
lower jaws. If treated
during growth this problem is often solved without the removal of
teeth.

- In
younger patients a cross bite of the back teeth at an early age may be
related to insufficient growth of the width of the upper jaw.
This problem is usually treated by expanding the upper jaw with
an appliance called a palatal spreader or rapid palatal expansion
appliance.

- Moderate
crowding of teeth can many times be treated without resorting to
extraction of permanent teeth.
